So, let’s be real – the term “consultant” may generate some stereotypical ideas: often a linear educational path, followed by similar professional experiences, all culminating in a role at a firm. At FMP, we think that our employees tend to defy those stereotypes. We don’t believe in formulaic career paths because our clients don’t seek formulaic solutions. We value the unique experiences, skills, and interests of each employee and we pride ourselves on fostering an environment where everyone can grow and thrive in their own way.
In the Not Your Typical Consultant Series, we’ll be showcasing some of our FMP employees and the fascinating paths that led them to us. From military backgrounds, to international adventures, to unique previous positions, our team has some captivating stories to share. In the third part of this series, we chat with Meg Duffy, a Senior Consultant, to gain insights into her unique journey and experiences at FMP, and what recommendations she would offer to candidates in our field.
- What can you tell us about yourself and your experiences prior to joining FMP?
I am not your typical consultant. I worked in the education and non-profit sectors for over 20 years before coming to FMP. I love helping others develop in their professional roles and develop new skills that will take them to the next level in their careers. When I’m not working, I’m likely planning my next travel adventure or tackling a new baking recipe. - How did your prior experience uniquely prepare you for consulting?
I have spent much of my career teaching and helping others to learn and grow. I’ve done this through program and training development, facilitation, and supporting others in their professional growth and development. I have been able to take these experiences and use them to support my clients. Since joining FMP, I have helped countless federal employees strengthen their feedback skills, develop strong leadership skills, and build their understanding of how to successfully manage through change. - How does working at FMP encourage growth and a dynamic career path?
I have always enjoyed training and facilitation and helping others develop new skills, so this was something I focused on a lot in previous roles. FMP provides me with opportunities to continue to develop my skills as a facilitator and to help our clients build and develop the skills necessary to grow in their current roles. - What, in your opinion, makes FMP different from other consulting firms or workplaces?
The emphasis on learning and growth is something that sets FMP apart from other places where I have worked. FMP’s culture is one where employees are encouraged to learn from one another and, no matter your level of experience, your thoughts and ideas are valued and appreciated. FMP provides employees with opportunities, not only to learn from one another, but to attend trainings and obtain certifications in order to continue to grow and develop. This focus on learning and growth is something that I have not encountered in previous roles and have come to really appreciate about FMP. - What piece of advice do you have for someone who is thinking about applying for a role at FMP?
My advice to anyone interested in FMP is to not let their previous experience stop them from learning more about us or applying to the company. FMP is made up of employees with a wide variety of skills and experience and all of these are needed to meet the needs of our clients. Don’t assume that because you don’t have a background in I/O Psychology or data analytics that you won’t be a good fit. Your experience and skills may be a better fit than you realize.
