We’re excited to be spotlighting Justin Fuhrmann today, an Engagement Manager at FMP! Justin is originally from Bergen County, New Jersey and has been with FMP for eight years. Read on to learn all about Justin!

Tell us about your professional/educational background.

I attended undergrad at Ithaca College, where I received a Bachelor of Science and met my wife, Amy! After college, I worked for a year with Target Corporation in logistics. I then attended Villanova University School of Law, where I received my Juris Doctor. After law school I knew I didn’t want to be a practicing attorney, but I had enough of an interest in employment law that I thought Human Resources and Strategic Human Capital work could be a good fit. Through the positive connections I had at Target Corporation, I came back to work for them, this time in the role of Human Resources Executive Team Leader. After working at Target for four years, in both the New York City area and in Maryland, I found FMP Consulting, and I have happily worked here for the past eight years!

What are your hobbies?

Three children wearing skis in the snow.
Rachel, Emma, and Norah skiing at Okemo in Vermont.

I really enjoy biking, specifically biking my three daughters around on my cargo bike. We put nearly 2,000 miles on our cargo bike in just the last year. Trips to and from school, work, restaurants, shopping, and just about anything else we can reach within 10 miles of our house is now accomplished on our cargo bike. It has served as a full car replacement. My girls love riding in the bike, being outside, and waving to people as we travel, and Amy and I love how it gets us outside and gives us an opportunity to stay in shape by incorporating our working out into the daily routine of responsibilities and errands we need to accomplish.

I enjoy planning vacations, a task that became more challenging as my family has grown over time. I especially enjoy visiting new cities and exploring all that they have to offer. Walking around new neighborhoods and experiencing varied cuisines are among my absolute favorite vacation activities. I am looking forward to visiting Vermont, Montreal, and Europe (for the first time in a decade) in 2024.

I also really enjoy skiing. I grew up skiing every weekend and ski racing competitively throughout the state of Vermont. While I don’t get to ski as often as I would like to now, Amy and I take the girls skiing on select winter weekends at Whitetail Mountain, and we take a week-long trip annually up to Vermont, normally staying at Okemo, where I learned to ski. It is incredibly meaningful for me to experience skiing once a year with my wife, daughters, and my dad at the mountain where I spent so much of my childhood.

What is something you are passionate about?

Justin, his wife, and his three daughters posing in their backyard for a family picture.
At home in Arlington, Virginia.

I am passionate about transportation design, transportation safety, and city planning. This passion led me to apply for and be appointed to the Arlington County Transportation Commission. I am serving a three-year appointment as a Commissioner, and I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to give back to my community and provide advisory expertise to projects throughout the county. I am proud to live in a community that is striving to better serve the needs of all road users by providing a healthier and safer transportation environment for pedestrians, public transit riders, cyclists, vehicle drivers, and other mobility users. When our built environment allows for people to safely travel in multiple ways, we are helping to create a healthier and freer society for people of all ages.

What brought you to FMP?

I came to FMP when my wife and I were expecting our first child. I wanted to find a job where I could complete interesting work and successfully balance my work and parenting responsibilities. The flexibility that FMP offered was unrivaled, and I greatly appreciated the ability to complete work around a growing list of parental responsibilities. This flexibility remains one of the most important factors for me now that I have three children.

What skills or competency areas are you excited to expand upon at FMP?

Justin and his family posing around their cargo bike, among other bikers.

I recently received my Certified Scrum Professional – ScrumMaster (CSP-SM) certificate, and I have enjoyed applying agile frameworks and principles to non-IT and software development environments. In addition to my current client work, where I help to maintain a scrum framework, I have also launched a Project Management Community of Practice at FMP that offers a one-stop-shop for project managers to gather advice and tools when starting, maintaining, or reforming a team, or wrapping up a project.

What keeps you excited to come to work every day?

Enabling my team to deliver the best results possible for my clients. I enjoy coaching others and helping to remove barriers in their work. I believe that, with the right tools and resources, clients and teams can solve their own challenges. Supporting others to be their best selves in their professional and personal lives is exceptionally rewarding.
